Active Directory resilience

Regain control of Active Directory

Recover from unwanted changes or major disruption, including ransomware and other cyberattacks. Recover specific objects or rebuild Active Directory outside the affected environment, with control over what you bring back.

Reduce disruption across the directory your business depends on

Employees, devices and applications rely on Active Directory to access the resources they need. A deleted group, an incorrect policy or a change to directory permissions can interrupt that access. A major compromise raises a different question: whether the existing environment can still be trusted.

Backupta helps your team choose a recovery response that fits the incident. Review the available recovery data, identify the affected configuration and restore a defined scope. When repairing the existing directory is no longer appropriate, prepare a new forest outside the compromised infrastructure.

Understand changes

Compare directory configurations across recovery points to identify changes to attributes, memberships and policies. Use that context alongside available audit evidence to narrow the investigation and decide what needs to be recovered.

Recover precisely

Restore selected users, groups, organizational units, computer accounts and GPOs, including supported attributes and relationships. Review the recovery scope before applying changes, so you can address the problem while preserving unrelated work.

Rebuild after major disruption

When ransomware or another cyberattack leaves your Active Directory environment untrusted, build a new forest outside the affected infrastructure using reviewed backup data. Choose what to recover, exclude unwanted configurations and validate the new Active Directory before reconnecting systems.

Know what happened and what to restore

Trace Active Directory events, compare object versions and identify the changes behind an incident. Backupta helps you select a known-good state and restore the affected object or attributes in the same workflow, so you spend less time investigating and preserve unrelated changes.

Recover objects with less manual rebuilding

Restore users, groups, OUs, computer accounts and GPOs with their supported dependencies, including memberships, permissions and policy links. Backupta reduces the work of researching and rebuilding these relationships manually, helping your team recover faster with less risk of missing a dependency.

Restart critical operations in an environment you trust

Build a new Active Directory forest in your own Azure environment, isolated from the affected on-premises infrastructure. Restore the identity resources needed for a minimum viable environment (MVE) first, validate the directory, then reconnect critical systems in stages.

Extend recovery control across your identity environments

Active Directory often operates alongside Microsoft Entra ID, and some organizations also use Okta. A recovery plan needs to account for the systems that manage access across the business, while respecting the different recovery requirements of each environment.

Backupta brings change visibility, recovery history and controlled recovery into one platform. Teams can use a consistent approach to investigate changes and define recovery scope across supported identity environments. An AD forest rebuild still requires its own validation and reconnection work; a shared platform does not make the recovery process identical for every provider.

Plan your Active Directory recovery

Walk through the incidents your team needs to handle, from an unwanted membership change to a compromised forest. Review the objects and relationships you need to recover, the recovery data required and the work involved in restoring access for your devices and applications.

Active Directory recovery questions

How is granular recovery different from rebuilding a forest

Granular recovery repairs selected objects, attributes, policies or relationships in an existing directory. It is appropriate when the affected configuration can be repaired and the environment remains a suitable recovery destination. A rebuild creates a new forest from backed-up directory data, with new SIDs and objectGUIDs. Machines and applications must be reconnected, and permissions and credentials require additional work before business access is restored.

Does a rebuild require a full domain controller backup

This rebuild path uses a complete object-level recovery set rather than restoring the original domain-controller image or database. The set must include the required directory configuration, schema information, DNS data and SYSVOL/GPO content. A basic export of users and groups is not enough. Teams need to verify that the required data is available for the intended recovery scope before relying on this path.

Does fresh infrastructure guarantee a clean directory

No. Backed-up objects, permissions and policies may contain unwanted changes made before the recovery point. Your team must review the selected data, decide what to exclude and validate the resulting directory. Isolation and fresh infrastructure help separate recovery from the affected environment, but they do not replace incident-response investigation or prove that every imported configuration is safe.

Is this instant failover

No. A new forest must be built and validated before the required identity, device and application work can be completed. Recovery time depends on the environment, the scope of the incident and the systems that need to reconnect. Restoring directory authentication is one part of business recovery; it is not evidence that every application and workflow is ready to resume.
