Identity resilience glossary
Okta
Okta is a cloud identity platform used to manage authentication and access to applications, particularly for workforce users. Its administrative environment, called an Okta organization or org, contains users, groups, application integrations, policies, and related configuration. Those settings help determine who can sign in and under which conditions.
Why Okta configuration matters
Application access depends on the relationships between identity objects, not just the existence of a user account. An app integration describes how Okta communicates with an application. Assignments identify its users, while policies govern access conditions. A change to one of these settings can affect an otherwise valid user's ability to work, even when the Okta service remains available.
An illustrative access change
Suppose an administrator changes the access policy for a support application and unintentionally blocks a group of legitimate users. The investigation should identify the changed rule, its previous conditions, and the applications it affects. A reviewed correction can then address that policy without unnecessarily reversing other approved changes. Testing should confirm both that the intended users regain access and that restrictions still apply where required.
How Okta differs from Auth0
Okta and Auth0 belong to the same company, but they are distinct identity platforms. An Okta org is not an Auth0 tenant. Their administrative interfaces, configuration objects, and management APIs should not be treated as interchangeable. Support for backing up one platform does not establish coverage for the other.
What recovery planning should cover
Identify which org, applications, policies, and relationships a recovery procedure covers. Record a known-good configuration and review legitimate changes made since that point before restoring anything. Where an external directory supplies identity data, check which system controls the affected values. Recovery should include access validation in the connected application; restoring an Okta setting does not restore that application's business data.
