Microsoft Entra External ID

Microsoft Entra External ID is Microsoft's offering for managing access by people outside an organization, including partners and customers. It includes B2B collaboration in workforce tenants and customer identity and access management, or CIAM, in separate external tenants. External ID is therefore broader than CIAM alone, and Microsoft does not describe it as a simple rename of Azure AD B2C.

Why the tenant type matters

A workforce tenant supports employees, internal applications, and collaboration with business guests. An external tenant supports applications published to consumers or business customers, with its own directory and sign-up experiences. These configurations address different access scenarios. The distinction helps teams identify which tenant, settings, and application owners belong in a change review or incident response.

Illustrative identity example

A software company invites a distributor into an internal project workspace through B2B collaboration. Separately, customers create accounts for its subscription application in an external tenant. Both scenarios can use External ID, but they involve different resources and user journeys. A problem affecting customer registration should not automatically be treated as a workforce guest-access problem.

Common misunderstanding

External ID is not another name for every external user account, nor is CIAM a Microsoft-specific term. CIAM describes a broader category of customer identity capabilities. Likewise, an existing Azure AD B2C deployment should not be assumed to have become an External ID deployment merely because Microsoft introduced a newer offering. Confirm the actual service and tenant configuration.

Recovery considerations

Recovery planning should name the tenant type and the affected sign-in or collaboration flow. Workforce and external tenants have feature differences, so a procedure validated in one should not be assumed to work unchanged in the other. For any backup or recovery service, verify the specific objects and settings covered, then test the affected application journey after remediation.
